It's never too late to protect yourself!!

Getting too hot can make you sick. You can become ill from the heat if your body can't compensate for it and properly cool you off. Heat exposure can even kill you. It has caused many deaths in the United States.

These are the main things affecting your body's ability to cool itself during extremely hot weather:

High humidity- sweat won't evaporate as quickly, which keeps your body from releasing heat as fast as it may need to.
Personal factors-Age, obesity, fever, dehydration, heart disease, mental illness, poor circulation, sunburn and prescription drugs and alcohol can play a role in whether a person can cool off enough in hot weather.

Those with the greatest risk:

The elderly, the very young and those with mental illness and chronic diseases.

But even young and healthy people can get sick from the heat if they participate in strenuous physical activities during hot weather.

The number one protective factor against heat-related illness and death is air-conditioning. If you do not have air-conditioning at home, spend time in public facilities that are air-conditioned.

You can take action now to prevent heat-related illnesses, injuries, and deaths at the end of this hot summer by:

   Staying indoors
   Drinking plenty of fluids.
   Replacing salt and minerals.
   Wearing appropriate clothing and sunscreen.
   Scheduling outdoor activities carefully.
   Pacing yourself.
   Using a buddy system.
   Monitoring people at high risk.
   Not leaving children in cars.

Use your common sense and avoid excessive exposure to the sun and heat conditions.

Here's to staying safe and cool!
